Microsoft Launches Surface 2/ Surface Pro 2 Tablets

Back in July 2012, Microsoft had unexpectedly announced their Windows 8 and RT tablets, the Surface Pro and Surface RT which featured the 10.6 inch screen and host of features. We also had done a detailed comparison of Surface Pro with Surface RT. A year later, it was clear that Surface RT was a big failure as it failed to impress and the main reason was the OS which had many shortcomings.

But now, Microsoft is once again back with the second generation Surface tablets which runs on Windows 8.1 which is vastly improved from the first version. The new Surface tablets comes in two variants like the first generation- the Surface Pro 2 and Surface 2.

Surface Pro 2

Here are the specs of Surface Pro 2:

  • Chipset: Intel Core i5 with 4GB or 8GB
  • Display: 10.6-inch, ClearType Full HD (1920×1080)
  • Battery: up to 7 or 8 hours
  • Weight: 2 pounds (907 grams)
  • Thickness: 0.53 inches (13.4 mm)
  • Connectivity: USB 3.0, Wi-Fi, HD video-out, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Card support: microSD up to 64 GB
  • Cameras: front and rear, 720p support
  • Colors: black, white
  • Storage: 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB
  • OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
  • Software: Bing apps, no Office version included

 

Surface 2

 

Here are the specifications for Surface 2 (or Surface RT 2)

  • Chipset: Nvidia Tegra 4 with 2GB RAM
  • Display: 10.6-inch, ClearType Full HD (1920×1080)
  • Battery: up to 10 hours
  • Weight: 1.5 pounds (680 grams)
  • Thickness: 0.37 inches (9.3 mm)
  • Connectivity: USB 3.0, Wi-Fi, HD video-out, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Card support: microSD up to 64 GB
  • Cameras: 3.5 megapixel front-facing camera, and a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera.
  • Colors: black, white
  • Storage: 32GB and 64GB
  • OS: Windows RT 8.1
  • Software: Office Home & Student 2013 RT, Outlook RT, Bing apps

Both the devices are available for pre-order starting from tomorrow with shipping on October 22nd. The devices now have longer battery, improved performance and also improved design with new kickstand position. Microsoft has also released a host of accessories which we will cover in detail.
