Many times we forget the Windows admin password and end up re-installing the OS again. Offline NT Password is a utility to (re)set the password of any user that has a valid (local) account on your Windows NT/2k/XP/Vista system. This utility works on the principle that Windows stores its user information, including encrypted passwords, in a file usually found in \system32\config.

Important Note: Resetting a user’s or administrator’s password on some systems might cause data loss, especially EFS-encrypted files.

Password recovery

Feature of this Utility;

  • Reset password of any user that has a valid (local) account on your Windows NT/2k/XP/Vista.
  • No need to know the old password to set a new one.
  • It works offline, that is, you have to shutdown your computer and boot off a floppy disk or CD.
  • Will detect and offer to unlock locked or disabled out user accounts.

You can read the complete FAQ on resetting password using this utility.

I’m now using password organizer. It helps me a lot to memorize my password. But I’ll note your tip in case I need it. Hopefully not :)

The only issue I have with tools that modify registry is that it is a big risk. You can render your system useless. But I guess it’s not much useful if you have forgotten your password and cannot login :)

Deepak said that using tools that modify the registry is “a big risk”.

In some cases this is most certainly true. Nevertheless, many system tools/utilities *do* modify the registry.

Forget about “tools” per se… *most* programs modify the registry, at the very least at install time.

It is not *what* is done, that one needs to worry about, so much as it is *why* it is done.

If the registry is used responsibly – no harm should result. The registry is intended to be modified. That’s precisely what it is there for.

In big enterprise environments the best way for password reset is self service solutions. From my personal experience I recommend a tool called desktop authority password self service.
This solution can really reduce an amount of password related calls to hepdesk staff saving a lot of money.
The cost of every such call for our company is up to $ 15.

I have a serious VISTA password issue that I need help with. I have two admin accounts on my laptop. One password has expired. In XP or NT platforms you must enter the expired password and then a new one. With VISTA, once it is expired you are locked out.
I attempted to logon as the other admin and change the password but VISTA (in its intelligence) says that you must verify ALL admins to change a password. Hard to do when the account you need to change is one of the admins.
    Any thoughts or help? Thanks.

    very good!
BTW, there is another good solution.

I have downloaded Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0 . it not only supports XP, 2000, and NT, I have personally tested it with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. It works perfectly to reset any local user account to a blank password. I Wrote it to an old 128mb USB flash drive do this. Booting up and clearing a password takes a minute or two works like a charm.
