Although you can manually download these photos by visiting the page, National Geographic Photo of the Day Wallpaper Changer is a freeware and portable app for Windows which can automatically download and set the wallpaper from National Geographic photo of the day website. You can switch between automatic and manual changing of wallpaper using the app.
You can enable daily archiving of the images automatically. You can also use the advanced archiving options to archive images between any (currently available between 1st Jan 2009 and Today) given dates.
