Mail Notifier is an excellent freeware app which notifies you of new emails from the system tray without having to keep the browser window open all the time.
The notifier looks very much similar to Windows 7 notifications in the system tray. You can add either a Gmail account or a Google Apps account, you can add multiple account to the notifier.
The preferences page allows you to configure the other options available for the notifier including disabling desktop notifications and start up.
Mail Notifier has secure account management and encrypted connections (HTTPS / SSL) features and when you click on any email it opens in the browser set in the preferences. Users will sign in automatically when they open Gmail or Google Apps account.
