Google Explains reCAPTCHA

Spam is one of the biggest problem faced by everyone using online services, be it emails or comments in blogs. It is estimated that around 95% of all emails are spam. Google has announced that the reCAPTCHA, a service acquired by Google, is now available for use. One unique aspect of reCAPTCHA is that data collected from the service is used to improve the process of scanning text, such as from books or newspapers. By using reCAPTCHA, you’re not only protecting your site from spammers; you’re helping to digitize the world’s books.

reCAPTCHA is available as a plugin for many web applications including WordPress. You need to sign up to use reCAPTCHA on your website. Luis Von Ahn, one reCAPTCHA’s co-founders, gives more details about how the service works in the video below:
