Google has launched a new service called Google App Engine which the company describes as a developer tool that enables you to run your web applications on Google’s infrastructure. Google App Engine gives you access to the same building blocks that Google uses for its own applications, making it easier to build an application that runs reliably, even under heavy load and with large amounts of data.

Features of App engine;

  • Dynamic webserving, with full support of common web technologies
  • Persistent storage
  • Automatic scaling and load balancing
  • Google APIs for authenticating users and sending email
  • Fully featured local development environment

Above all App engine is free and the free account can use up to 500MB of persistent storage and enough CPU and bandwidth for about 5 million page views a month. There could be more paid features in the future. Currently App Engine is in preview and account registrations are limited to the first 10,000 developers, and applications are restricted to the free account limits.
