Most of you might be aware of the Conficker worm which is supposed to exploit PCs on April Fool’s Day. After this date, machines infected with the “C” variant of the worm may not be able to get security updates or patches from Microsoft and from many other vendors. The creators of the worm will also start using a communications system that is more difficult for security researchers to interrupt. The Conficker worm, sometimes called Downadup or Kido has managed to infect a large number of computers.
McAfee Avert® Labs has released a small worm removal tool called AVERT Stinger Conficker which can help you to remove the Conficker worm from PCs affected. This special build of its stand-alone cleaning tool christened Stinger which will be updated on a daily basis to include any undetected Conficker variants from the wild.
Users whose computers are not configured to receive patches and updates from Microsoft and who are not running an up to date antivirus product are most at risk. As of now, we are not sure what could be the effect of this worm or rather how intensive this worm could be, so its always better to have all the updates and patches installed.

Good article. Sophos’ Conficker removal tool can detect and remove all variants of the worm/virus.
As long as people run these tools it should stop any serious outbreak.
