Last year, Micromax announced its latest flagship phone, the Micromax Canvas Turbo. This phone comes with few upgrades when compared to Canvas 4 which was also released last year. The device sports a 5.0 inch display, but this time it is a Full HD 1080p display and first time on a Micromax phone. The phone features a IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 441ppi.

On the processor side, the device comes with a Mediatek MT6589T, Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A7 processor with 2GB RAM. There is also 16GB internal storage, but no microSD card support. The device also comes with a 13MP rear camera with LED flash and a 5MP front facing camera. There is 1080p Full HD recording capabilities for the camera. Apart from this, it also comes with a 2000mAh battery which is non-removable as the back cover is non-removable. The device supports dual SIM.

Here is the detailed review of the device. If you want the text version, read on.

Design, Build and Display:

There isn’t anything special with the design and looks like any other high end Micromax phone. It features an edge-to-edge glass, curved edges, and glossy sides. The build quality of the phone is really good and one of the best Micromax devices till date. The matte finish aluminium back cover looks good on the device and feels solid in hands. The Full HD display is just average and not that great as the viewing angles aren’t great. Micromax could have done better with the display.

The back panel isn’t removable although it is not an unibody design. On the sides you have the two SIM trays and also the volume keys and power button similar to any other Android phone.

Performance:

The device comes with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean although Micromax could have gone with 4.3 version. Micromax hasn’t made many changes to the stock Android and it looks more or less the same as core Android, but the icons are not designed well. On the software front, it comes with iFloat which is  small circle that provides quick access to media player, messaging, browser etc and sits on any location on the screen. In case you find it annoying, you can disable it from the settings.

Overall, the performance of the device is pretty good with 2GB RAM and quad core processor, but where the device fails is in gaming. The gaming performance of the device is nothing to write home about. The device lags when you play high end graphics games like Asphalt 8. Call performance is good and there was no dropping of calls and so was the music quality with the built in speakers.

There is also the Blow to unlock app included in the device which allows you to unlock the phone by blowing air on to the device.

Camera:

The phone comes with a 13MP camera with LED flash and a 5MP front facing camera. The camera performance is decent in daylight, but falls short in night photography or low light. The daylight shots are pretty decent on the device and the colors are pretty good. But when you take photos inside, there is terrible amount of noise added to the photos. The device is able to record videos in 1080p Full HD. Here are some sample shots taken using the phone.

Battery:

The battery life on the device is pretty decent and you get a day of usage with the 2000mAh battery. Ideally we would have liked a bigger battery on this flagship product from Micromax. Moreover, the Full HD display accounts for more battery usage which isn’t compensated with a bigger battery.

Verdict:

DSC_0492

The Micromax Canvas Turbo is a good phone with decent specs, a Full HD display, 13MP camera and also good build quality. Although the flagship gives decent value for money, Micromax can improve the display and also the battery capacity on this device. If you are not looking for Full HD display, then Canvas 4 which is priced lesser makes much better choice than the Canvas Turbo.
