Monitor Activity on a Registry Key with Registry Live Watch

Registry is one of the most important aspect of Windows and if you are doing any change on Registry, make sure that you do a back up of it. Registry Live Watch is a free, lightweight and portable tool to monitor activity on a registry key. You can run this tool from the system tray (notification area in Windows 7) and monitor a registry key for different kind of changes. The application in itself does not change the registry, but just monitors in read only mode.

Registry Live Watch is a portable application, there is no install process, just unzip to any folder and run it. You need to specify the root key from the available drop down list and enter the key value. Once you click monitor, it starts the monitor of the particular key.

You can also save the log of monitoring. You can also specify to run an event in case there is any change in the keys you have selected for monitoring.

Backup and Compare Registry with RegShot

Regshot is a small,free and open-source registry backup and compare utility that allows you to quickly take a snapshot of your registry and then compare it with another version of the registry. This free utility is very useful if you want to check the changes made to the registry by installing any software. With this tool, you can take a snapshot of the registry before and after doing system changes or installing a new software product.

The changes to the registry can be made into a report that can be generated in text or HTML format and contains a list of all modifications that have taken place between snapshot1 and snapshot2. In addition, you can also specify folders to be scanned for changes as well.

Usage of the tool is very simple, click on the 1st Shot and take a snapshot of your registry or save it to the location you specify. Now do any changes to the system or install the software and then click on the 2nd snapshot. Select your output LOG file type,”text” or “HTML,default is “text” and then click compare. The application will generate the report of the registry.

RegShot is a fairly simple and easy to use utility to compare and back up Windows registry.

How to Disable Vista’s Built-In CD Burning

There are lots of free application with good features for CD/DVD burning in Vista, so you can turn off Vista’s in built CD burning function. This can be easily done through a registry entry. To do this Click Start- Run- Regedit. This opens the registry editor of Vista. In registry editor navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer.

NB: Please take a back up of Registry Editor before making any changes. Author will not be responsible for any damages caused to the registry.

Right click and create a new DWORD (32 bit) key NoCDBurning.

Double click on the newly created DWORD value and enter value data as 1.

Click OK and close the registry editor. Now log off Vista and log in again to see the effect. Default CD burner will be disabled in Vista.

How to Export Websites in Security Zone to another PC

Internet explorer has an integrated zone for adding web addresses which are classified as “Trustworthy Sites” and “Restricted sites“. Many entries might have added if you are using IE for long time. Now when you want to shift these settings to another PC, you can export these data and read it on another PC.

To export these setting, open registry editor (Run->Regedit). Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

Select the entry and click export from the file menu. Type in a name for the file and ensure that the ‘Selected Branch’ option in save window is activated and click the Save button.

Now you can copy the file to new PC and double click to add the details to the registry.
