If you are using a free WordPress theme, then you might be knowing that there could be many scripts and other functions which could be potential threats to your blog. There could also be chances that some advertisements or dangerous JavaScript inserted into legitimate themes by third party theme download sites. TAC stands for Theme Authenticity Checker which is a WordPress plugin which will scan all of your theme files for potentially malicious or unwanted code and tell you whether there is any threat.

Once installed, it performs a scan on all the themes installed on your blog and checks for any threats. In case the plugin detects any malicious or encrypted code, you can contact the theme author and check the exact use of the code before actually doing the code clean up.

This plugin shows the exact location where the malicious code is detected and when you click, it will open the theme editor with the file to be modified. So if you are using a theme which is not developed by you, this plugin could be useful to track any unwanted codes or scripts.

Download TAC

Having WordPress installed on your local machine (Windows) has many advantages as you can test your theme locally before uploading or if you want to release a plugin, you can install on local machine and test it. The traditional method of installing WordPress is by downloading XAMPP for Windows and then configuring MySQL. With Microsoft Web Platform Installer, you can install WordPress quickly and easily without having any knowledge of configuring MySQL. It is similar to installing any application on Windows.

After downloading the Web Installer, open the Web Applications tab and select WordPress (located inside blogs). Select the box against WordPress and then click install.

The installer will download the necessary files from web. Once the files are downloaded, the installer will install WordPress locally. Based on your Internet speed, download might take time.

Once the installation is complete, you need to configure WordPress and MySQL by entering the username and password.

Once Web Platform Installer finishes the installation of WordPress, click on the Launch WordPress link and it will open WordPress installation in browser window. You need to enter a blog name and it generates the default user and password. You can login to your admin dashboard using the credentials.

By default, you local login URL will be “http://localhost/wordpress/wp-login.php”. You can try out all the plugins and themes on this local installation before actually uploading to server.

This way of installing WordPress is much easier than installing XAMPP and then configuring MySQL and Apache.

Download Microsoft Web Platform Installer

Whenever a new version of WordPress is released, we have seen a new feature also being added. Back in July WordPress had asked users to vote for media features which they would like to see in version 2.9 and basic image editor was one of the features available for voting. Now it seems that this feature might come up in the next major release. WPEngineer has posted few screenshots of image editor for WordPress 2.9 which is under development.

As the image suggests, the image editor is very basic and allows you to crop, rotate and scale images without the use of any plugins.

We are not sure whether this feature has been finalised for Version 2.9 as it is still under development. What is your view on this feature of WordPress, is this going to be a useful feature or plugins can do this job better? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

Creating a WordPress theme needs lot of programming and it definitely is not an easy task.
The final version is not yet ready, so the current free version has some restriction on the resolution of the template, images should be GIF format, the template can be converted only to WordPress etc. There are tutorials on how to start using the plugin which can be found here.

We have seen many themes in WordPress have the capability to resize images without having to do it manually. TimThumb is a PHP Script script released by Darren Hoyt which can resize images to your desired size on the fly without having to manually resize it. With this script, you can easily resize images by just calling the script with the parameter (height and width) and it returns the resized image.

How to use the script?

1. Simply copy the source code into a new document called ‘timthumb.php’, place it in a folder on your site server in any folder or create a new folder called scripts

2. Call the image like this in the following format

<img src=”/scripts/timthumb.php?src=/images/whatever.jpg&h=150&w=150&zc=1″ alt=”">

Here replace whatever.jpg with the image name you want to resize and also use your desired size and height.

Parameters accepted by this script;

w: width

h: height

zc: zoom crop (0 or 1)

q: quality (default is 75 and max is 100)

More information on this script available here. You can also check out a live demo of the script in action.

Su.pr is the new URL shortening service from StumbleUpon which is still by invite code. We had reviewed the features of Su.pr and also the integration with StumbleUpon. Su.pr has released a new plugin for WordPress which enables users to easily post links to Twitter and Facebook. So whenever you post any new article on your blog, they can be automatically shared on Twitter and Facebook. Check out our review of Su.pr.

The WordPress has some great customization options and allows you to open have an option to customize posts to Twitter or Facebook when a new blog post is added. Once installed and activated, you need to configure the settings of the plugin.

You have the option to either customize the Twitter posts or use the default settings for Twitter and Facebook. If you have opted for the first option in the settings “Display option to customize posts to Twitter or Facebook when I add a new blog”, then a new options box is available in Add/Edit post page.

Another great feature of this plugin is that you can host short URLs from your own domain (for example http://yourdomain.com/ABCD). Details on how to use your domain for short URLs are available here.

Features of this Plugin;

If you maintain more than one blog or a forum, then you can display the RSS feed of your posts or articles from another website on your WordPress blog. This would in turn give more exposure to your posts written else where. Although there might be plugins to do this job, you can do this using just 2 lines of code. WordPress has a build in function to get the RSS feed of any website.

We used this query to get the RSS feed of our Mobile Blog in the sidebar. Here is the code.

<?php include_once(ABSPATH . WPINC . ‘/rss.php’);
wp_rss(’http://feeds2.feedburner.com/themobileblogin, 5); ?>

The first line of code is to call to RSS core file of WordPress and in the second line we specify the feed URL and the number of posts to be displayed using the wp_rss() function. You need to replace the feed URL with the URL you want to display in the sidebar. You can see the Mobile Blog posts showing up in the sidebar of this blog using this method.

You can also do some formatting using the <ul> and <li> based on your current theme style.

NB: If you are not comfortable adding the code, you might get some plugins to do the job, but it is always advisable to go with lesser number of plugins.

Thanks to WP Recipes for this tip.
