In Windows 7 if you have already set up a Wireless Network connection, then you can copy this profile and use it on another machine running on Windows 7. You can copy the network settings to USB Flash Drives and then use it on other machines. The way you add a device or computer to your network depends on the type of network adapter and the version of Windows your computer is running. This feature will work on machines running Windows 7, Vista and Windows XP.

1. Click on the network icon in the taskbar and right click on the network profile and select properties.

3. This will open a new window and ask you to insert the USB flash drive.

4. Click Next and this will copy the network settings to the USB drive.

5. If you want to install this settings on another machine, double click the setupSNK file in the USB drive and it will automatically configure the settings.

If you are using Windows Vista, then you might be knowing that you can upgrade to Windows 7 directly from the upgrade pack. We have covered how to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 using Easy File transfer without losing your files. Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is more easier task and you will not lose any of your installed programs unless it is non compatible with Windows 7. Make sure that when you are upgrading, you are using the same version of Windows 7.

1. Insert the Windows 7 upgrade CD and double click the set up file. Click on Install Now when the set up loads.

2. In the next step, you can either chose to download all the latest updates if you are connected to internet or install without getting the updates.

3. Accept the license terms and click next.

4. In the type of installation, select upgrade. This will allow you to upgrade from Windows Vista.

5. Now the set up will check for compatibility and if it finds any issues, it saves the report to the desktop.

6. In case there are no compatibility issues, the set up will continue with the installation. You can follow the steps on the screen to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7.

You can check the Windows 7 upgrade advisor to see if your PC is compatible for upgrade and also check out the upgrade chart while upgrading from Windows Vista.

Although most of the programs written for Windows Vista will work properly with Windows 7, there might be some programs only compatible with Windows XP or previous versions. If a program written for an earlier version of Windows doesn’t run correctly on your Windows 7, then you can try changing the compatibility settings for the program, either manually or by using the Program Compatibility troubleshooter. Both these method does the same actions of changing the program to make it compatible.

To use the Program Compatibility troubleshooter, click the Start button and then click the Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Programs, click Run programs made for previous versions of Windows.

This will start the Program Compatibility checker, click next.

The tool will check for any issue and list out all the programs installed on Windows 7, select the program which is not working currently and then click next.

In the next step, you can either select recommended settings or still troubleshoot the problem.

In the next step, the tool will apply the recommended settings and you can try starting the application to check if it is working fine with the new settings.

If the application is working fine, click next and save the settings so that application will use the selected settings all the time.

Alternatively you can also do this job by right clicking on the exe file of the program and then making it compatible with previous version of Windows it was designed for.

If any of the Windows system files are missing or are corrupted, Windows may not behave as expected. For example, some Windows functions may not work, or Windows may crash. Windows 7, like previous version, has an inbuilt tool called system File Checker tool (SFC.exe) which scans for missing or corrupted system files and repairs them. Using System File Checker tool (SFC.exe), you can determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file.

To start System File Checker (SFC.exe), follow the steps below.

1. Open an elevated command prompt, i.e command prompt run as an administrator. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

2. Now type the command sfc /scannow and press enter. The System File Checker will start checking the system.

This process might take some time as it has to scan all the system files for errors.

3. Once the scan is complete it will display the result to inform whether there are any issues with the system files.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. In case the tool is not able to fix the error, it is better to restore the system to a previous state using System restore.

Windows 7 has a build in administrator account which is actually disabled just like Windows Vista, but in case you want to create a new account with the same name administrator, then you can rename the default admin account. Since the default admin account is disabled, if you try to create another admin account with the same name ‘administrator’, then Windows 7 will throw an error saying that there is already an account with similar name.

So if you want to create an account with name ‘administrator’, then its better to rename the default admin account using the following steps;

1. Open the Local Security Policy editor using the command secpol.msc in the start menu or typing it in the run command.
2. In the left panel, expand Local Policies, and click on Security Options.

3. In the right panel, right click or double click on Accounts: Rename administrator account and click on Properties.

4. Type in a name you want instead that has not ever been used by any other user account on the computer, and click on OK.
5. If you have enabled the built-in Administrator account, then you can log off or switch users to see the change or try creating a new admin account with the name ‘administrator’.

We have covered various Twitter clients for Windows, now here is another twitter client which is in fact a Windows 7 sidebar gadget. Although Tweetz is a sidebar gadget, it provides you with all the functionality of Twitter like retweet, reply, search etc. It also support for mentions, direct messages and has a built in URL shortener which make it breeze to use. It even does reverse looks up on links so you’ll know where they go before click on them.

To update your status, click anywhere in title area of the gadget near the top. Compose your message including any links. To shorten links, click the “Shorten” button and Tweetz will scan the message for links and shorten them in place. You can also add a sound notification when a new tweet arrives.

Each tweet available in the gadget has an option for replying, retweeting and also adding to favorites. Apart from this, you can also have a compact version of the gadget on the sidebar in case you feel the overall size is big (which is again customizable). Overall we were impressed by this twitter client and if you are already using sidebar gadgets, this is an useful add.

Download Tweetz

In case you are having issue with memory on your Windows 7, then you can have a check of the memory performance using the memory diagnostic tool of Windows 7. If Windows detects possible problems with your computer’s memory, it will prompt you to run the Memory Diagnostics Tool. You can either reboot the system and run the memory diagnostic tool or schedule it for the next reboot. To start the tool manually, click start menu, select run (Win Key + R) and type mdsched.exe and press enter.

When the system reboots, Windows 7 will run the memory diagnostic tool before starting up the OS.

Advanced options for running the Memory Diagnostics Tool

It is recommended that you let the Memory Diagnostics Tool run automatically. However, advanced users might want to adjust the tool’s settings. Here’s how:

When the Memory Diagnostics Tool starts, press F1.

You can adjust the following settings:

Test mix. Choose what type of test you want to run: Basic, Standard, or Extended. The choices are described in the tool.

Cache. Choose the cache setting you want for each test: Default, On, or Off.

Pass count. Type the number of times you want to repeat the test.

Press F10 to start the test.

Once the tool does the diagnostics, it boots the OS and informs you about any issues regarding the memory.
