How to Get a Vanity URL for Facebook Pages and Applications

Facebook had introduced the feature of vanity URL some time back in June where in you can select your own profile URL. This made it easier to remember Facebook profiles as there was no ID used in the URL. Choosing a username is optional and will give you a distinct Web address for your profile. It will not change the name that appears on your profile, in search or elsewhere on the site. Just like having a vanity URL for your username, you can also get a vanity URL for your Facebook pages and applications. To get a vanity URL, navigate to this page (this is the same page where you set username).

Here you can see the username you have set for your account and below a link is available for setting up username for pages. When you click this link, it shows up a drop down list which lists all the pages and application under your account. Select the page/application and enter the desired username and check the availability.

In order to set username for your Facebook Page it must meet the requirements that it should have a minimum of 100 fans. In case your page does not meet the criteria, you will not be eligible for setting the username for pages/applications.

Once you have set the username for pages, you can directly and easily access the pages using this URL.

Facebook Launching New Profile Design next Week

Facebook is launching its newly designed profile page to users next week. Users can start exploring the new profile during the week of July 14. One of the major changes is that the width of profile page has been increased on either sides. The Application menu has been moved to top and included in navigational menu as a drop down item.

Another major feature is the use of tabs, personal info, boxes, photos etc are arranged in different tabs and switching between tabs is Ajax powered. With this navigating through profiles is much more faster. Users have the provision to add new tabs.

Overall the new design is less cluttered and also much faster than the previous one. You can try out the new beta layout here.

Earlier we had written on how to customize your Facebook layout with Facebook Expressions Application. Here is another Facebook Application which can give a beautiful look to your profile. This application is similar to Facebook Expressions and it will appear in the sidebar of your profile. You can install these layouts in your Facebook Profile by directly clicking on them (you will need to log in to your Facebook account).

One of the best features of Facebook is the support of lot of applications. Nowadays the support for instant messaging applications in Social sites is increasing. Windows Live Messenger is available in the form of widgets for adding to blogs and websites and now Windows Live messenger is available as an application in Facebook. With this application your friends can chat with you when they visit your profile. You can also chat with other friends who have installed this application.

1. Install the Windows Live Messenger application from here.

2. Login with your Windows Live ID.

3. The application is added to your profile and your friends can chat.

How to Enable Thumbnail previews of Friends in Facebook

Facebook has various options to show your friends like Online now, Recently updated, Recently added etc. All these shows friends in on default layout. You can also see all your friends in thumbnails previews. To see friends in thumbnail previews, click on the friends link in the main menu. In the friends list select the more tab. Once the more tab is selected, a dropdown is visible where you can sort the friends list.

Now select the option ‘—’ and you can see all your friends in thumbnail previews.

How to Import RSS Feeds to Facebook

Facebook has an feature by which you can add RSS feed of your blog into Facebook. By this feature you can share the posts of your blog with your friends and display them on you profile. To add your blog feed, login to your Facebook account and click on notes in the left navigation. Once you click notes, you can see “Import a blog” in the right side under note settings.

After clicking Import a blog, you need to enter the url of RSS feeds of your blog and click start importing. Facebook will automatically update your notes whenever you write in your blog. Imported blog posts cannot be edited. After importing, you need to confirm the import.

Now all your blog posts will be available in notes and will keep updated. You can share these posts with your friends and also display them on your profile page.

Privacy is one thing which everyone would like to see in any social networks or photo sharing sites. Facebook also has privacy options to protect your personal photos, so that it can be viewed by only you or people selected by you. This is important especially because of the fact that there is lot of hacking going on in these social sites.

To enable privacy on your photos, click on the Privacy link on the top right corner of your account. In the privacy options, select Profile. In the options for profile, select customize from the drop down list for “Photos Tagged of You”.

In the customize menu, you can set privacy for the photos uploaded by you. Permissions can be friends, friends of friends, some friends (custom list) or only me. You can also restrict particular individuals or groups from seeing the photos.

With this feature, you can easily set permissions on your personal photos.

How to Customize Your Facebook Profile

Facebook is one of the popular social network after MySpace. Unlike MySpace, which allows customizations for all areas, Facebook does not have much customizations for your Profile and are limited. But still you can do some customizations to your profile. Facebook Expressions is one such application which can give a new look to your Facebook profile and layout.

Expressions are similar to wallpaper for your Facebook profile. The Expressions application is added through Facebook and allows you to display eye catching designs (Expressions) on your profile.

How to add expressions?

1. Navigate to Facebook Expressions and and install the application on your Facebook (you need to login to add the application).

2. Once you install the application you can come back to the main website where you can then find an Expression you like by browsing the categories on the left.

3. After finding an Expression you like, click the “Add to Profile” button. This will take you to your Facebook profile where you will see your newly applied Expression.
