The free Antivirus software from Microsoft which was code named “Morro” has been officially named as Microsoft Security Essentials. We had covered a few leaked screenshots of the new antivirus and the public beta version of this software would be available June 23. If you have a licensed copy of Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or above), Windows Vista, or Windows 7, you’ll be able to download and install the software at no additional charge.
When the antivirus is installed, it validates whether the copy of Windows running is genuine or not. The application will be available in 32- and 64-bit flavors. If you have Windows Defender working on your PC, then MSE will uninstall Windows Defender, as MSE is a superset of Defender.
Microsoft Security Essentials adds antivirus protection—both real-time protection and on-demand scanning. It shares the same engine and signatures as other Microsoft antimalware products, including the enterprise-focused Forefront and the monthly Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool.
Microsoft says the program is Windows Logo Certified and updates its virus and spyware signatures daily through Microsoft Update. New signatures are published three times a day, which means that clients will never get a new update that is less than eight hours old.
