Windows Live team has announced the availability of Web Messenger for Windows Live Hotmail. With this feature you can chat with your friends in Live messenger without having to install it in the desktop. You will be able to send instant messages from the Windows Live Hotmail and People pages. So if you are using computer from friends place or a public computer, you can still chat with Hotmail contacts.

You can sign into Web messenger from top right hand corner where there is a link named Messenger. Once you have signed in, you can set your status by clicking on the link. If you want to chat with your online friends, then navigate to contacts list and you can see the option.
The contact list displays whether the person is in your messenger or not. If the person is available, the avatar is surrounded by a green color and if offline, it shows the normal color. If a person is online, you can click on the avatar and select “Send an Instant Message” option to start chatting.

This will open up a new window similar to desktop application and includes support for smileys. Live team says that customers in Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and USA will see this feature for the first time today. This feature was rolled out to users in France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and the UK last month.
Although India is not featured in the list, I was still able to login to web messenger from my Windows Live account. In case you are not able to see web messenger in Windows Live Hotmail account, you need to wait as this feature will be rolled out to all accounts in coming months.
