What’s wrong with getting software from the distro’s repository? I sure know what’s wrong with not getting it from the repository.
Definitely their is nothing wrong in getting distro’s from repository but searching right distro is tedious task.
I have not downloaded Linux App for a long long time now. I just apt-get install .
One can just apt-get or equivalent as long as your Linux box has connection to the Internet.
Even if net access is via http proxy, apt-get can go via the proxy
export http_proxy=http://address:port will do the trick.
Ubuntu Guide has the command to install just about every app you would need

If there is Internet access, Linux distros comes with lots of packages. For such case, I suggest to use the multimedia ready out of the box distro such as Mepis, LinuxMint etc.
