Alexa Changes Website Ranking System
Alexa has changed the ranking system for websites and it claims that the ranking have improved methodology and better source. Alexa rankings was started in 1998 and till now it was using the Alexa toolbar to collect data for website ranking. There has been lot of discussions on the inaccuracy of Alexa ranking as it was based only on the toolbar information and this toolbar was used only by a minority of internet users.
As per the new system data is aggregated from multiple sources to give a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users. There is a change in ranking of many sites after this new algorithm. Alexa says that the old ranking have been removed and data is now available only for past 9 months, but it could be restored in the coming weeks.
This blog also saw a change in the ranking, 2 days back it was somewhere around 83k and now its 65, 139.

Thats a good news. Even when we know alexa ranking was all wrong, we had no other option good as alexa. And now we have something to trust in them.

The new Alexa ranking so much more accurately reflects the quality of the websites in its listings with this update. But, then I would say that my Sciencebase.com site leaped back into the top 100,000

Strangely, we are seeing a consistent increase in the number of unique visitors through Statcounter.com, the changes in Alexa ranking are slightly dis-aligned.
Wondering, how to make our visitors install Alexa Tool bar!!!

There is some controversy over how representative Alexa’s user base is of typical Internet behavior. If http://www.alexa.com/data/deta.....ehotels.in Alexa’s user base is a fair statistical sample of the internet user population, Alexa’s ranking should be quite accurate.
