.Asia Domains to be Available in February 2008
ADVERTISEMENTSThe Internet corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has recently approved the proposal for creating .asia domains. The domains will be available for public registration from February 2008. Currently it will be open only for businesses which operate from Asia-Pacific and they need to prove that they operate from this region.
This step of verification is planned to prevent the selling of .asia domains at a higher price after acquiring it from other places. All .asia domains will be checked by DotAsia foundation.
It is estimated that around 11% of the domain name registers occur from Asia-Pacific which has a internet usage population of 33%. As the internet came late to Asia, .com and .net were already taken up by the west.
This move would definitely give a push for internet businesses from Asia, giving it a much needed geographical flavor.

Certainly, it will help Asian to find better domains. It is true that by the time Internet proliferated in Asia, most of the good domain names were already grabbed.

I saw that pop up on my Godaddy account the other day… I almost was compelled to do a few searches for some names. I really like to stick to purchasing dot Com names though. Thanks for letting us know about the .asia names.
