You might have enough disk space, but how much desk-space do you have? I am sure how much ever it is, at some point or the other it must have seemed too small. At least to me, it did appear so and I set out on a hunt for multiple desktop utilities. Of the ones I tried, Dexpot impressed me the most.

Dexpot

The Software:
Dexpot is a multiple desktop utility using which you can enhance your desk space by up to 20 times. It helps you to switch between multiple desktops and configure each of them separately.

Pros of Dexpot :

  • Individuality of Desktops: Each desktop can run a different application without interfering at all with any of the others. Also, one can configure each desktop separately by applying different icons and wallpapers and associating different sound clips with each of them.
  • Smooth Functioning: It does not gorge up your RAM and the transition between desktops is fast and smooth unlike most of its counterparts.

Cons of Dexpot :

  • Icons appear when we refresh or arrange icons : As soon as you arrange the icons or you press the refresh button, all the other icons which are present on Original desktop also appear up on those desktop where you don’t want those icons.

Bottom Line
Dexpot is a nice software and certainly can make life simple but it needs a bit of improvement in the interface so that desktop management can becomes fairly easy. Also, it needs to certainly take care of the only negative we’ve mentioned.
If you are one of those who perform most of the task through desktop and want the desktop a little bit uncluttered then this is the software which can help you.

I use a virtual desktop manager with all my oses. For windows I use Dexpot. It works with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. Dextop is free.
With Dexpot I can do the following

    1. Create up to 20 virtual desktops. Most virtual desktop managers in windows only allow you to create 4 virtual desktops.

    2. Use it on a flash drive. The program does not need admin rights to run.

    3. Get a full screen preview of all the virtual desktops in use

4 Use all the features of Mac expose in Windows.

    5. Move windows from one desktop to the other using the keyboard mouse and desktop preview. Most virtual desktop managers for windows failed to move the command prompt. In Dexpot you can only the command prompt by keyboard shortcut.

    6. Name each desktop.

    7. Give each desktop a different set of desktop icons and background images.

    8. Set applications to open on a specific desktop.

    9. Change keyboard shortcuts for the indiviual functions of the application.

10 The user is able to escape the application if you need to. Example keyboard shortcut conflick beween Dexpot and another program. The program will move all application windows to the current desktop. This helps to prevent lost application windows when the program closes.
