Google’s Biggest PR Hunt

ADVERTISEMENTS

The biggest buzz in the blogosphere is the latest PR update by Google which was done mainly to reduce the PR of many popular blogs and Websites. We do not know whether this update was done to penalize the blogs or was it a change in the Google algorithm. The most important thing in this update is that many blogs have lost their PR by more than half.

Analyzing the update does not lead to any particular reason. Google had already said its strategy to penalize blogs selling links, but many of the blogs which lost PR were not selling links.

While reading DBT’s article on PR update, I found an interesting comment made by Stephen. Here is it;

The primary audience for many of these sites are bloggers. These sites derive their popularity from others who are quite likely being penalized. Now that the algorithm has been changed and all those links have lost their juice, the popular blogging niche sites are losing Page Rank as a byproduct.

This does make little sense and seems like there has been a major change in the PR algorithm. Lets see if Google gives any particular reason for this update.

Update: Looks like there is also an update going on. I saw a few sites which have got an increase in PR.

  1. I started noticing this yesterday and a lot of big blogs got hit by this. However, these blogs do not need the PR to get advertisers on their site.

    It is the traffic alone that counts. Only the mediocre bloggers get affected by this

  2. This doesn’t seem to be a full update.. some new sites and the ones that changed domain name thus ending up with PR0 are still in the same position. Some PR4 sites I know (and not involved in SEO tactics) are still PR4…

    May be this is yet another penalty update

  3. Well let us await a formal communication from google or the report of a research done to find out the reasons…To me blogs however popular they are do not deserve the PR as they are mostly duplicate stuff…probably google is taking into account the uniqueness of the of the content as well…hopefully the originator of the content gets the credit as per the new system…i also hope that news that are made popular by social networking sites like digg and others lose credibility as they are 90% unfairly promoted…

  4. They are on a hunt for sure, hunting for prey hehe

  5. @Jalaj,
    Looks like a penalty update!

    @Indyankk,
    Lets see what Google has to say about the update.

    @Keith,
    They are in hunt for preys. :grin:

  6. Is it just me or does Google seem to be getting really picky. I understand that they have a business model of providing the best searches but when you start throwing out new guidelines without any reason… It would be nice if they would give somewhat of a notice. Maybe that’s just the nature of the beast.

  7. Nirmal, someday people are gonna look down on those guys who fret just too much over the little green bar.

    Cheers!
    Mani

  8. I think they are just penalizing the blogs and after it they plan to do a proper update.

  9. @Mani,
    You are right, that time will arrive soon. :smile:

    @Madhur,
    I’m also hoping that we have a regular PR update.

  10. I’m still at 0 and who knows when it’ll finally get updated! It’s scary though because it’s like you can never really rely on your web site for making money.

    Any day Google can cut you off and there goes all your revenue stream! Sucks

  11. @Aseem,
    This is the problem with Google, since they dominate the internet, we have follow their rules.

  12. They’re top gun - for now. They’ve ticked off a lot of people though. It’s going to be interesting to see what the backlash will be if any.

  13. The big blogs won’t mind the PR as long as the revenue keeps coming in.

    As I noticed now, Technospot and Rishiraj’s blog have also got their PR knocked off. The mid-level blogs have the most to lose now

  14. my blog received a PR 4 from the previous 3 :grin: But i never gave this fictional stats a damn. Page rank is crap as you can make a perfect PR 7 to 8 website just using some easily blackhat tactics, ALEXA can be easily manipulated.
    My advice to you’ll….if you are really wanna show your hate to google then…. use the new ajax yahoomail rather then gmail, use GAIM for instant messeging, use yahoo search with Yahoo Search Assist rather then google search, use wordpress.com for your free blog rather then blogger.com, besides there are hundreds of free useful tools that are better then google crap.

  15. My sites also experienced a backlash. I don’t know what’s the basis of Google for doing this update but I just hope they will give their reasons on this one.
