3 Improvements for Blogger and Wordpress.com

Advertisements

There has been lot of debate among bloggers on which is the best free blogging platform. Wordpress.com and Blogger stands out as they have lot of features compared to others. Recently Kevin from Blogging tips conducted a competition on which is better- Blogger or Wordpress.com. Here I’m not going to debate which is better because both has its own advantages and disadvantages. I’m listing down 3 features which I would like to add/improve in Blogger and Wordpress.com.

Wordpress-Blogger

1. Blogger:

  • Comment form: Blogger has a very bad commenting system. I should say that its commenting system always discourages readers to express their opinions.
  • Ability to create pages and categories: Another feature sadly missing in Blogger is the ability to create pages like contact, about etc and also categories. Currently only labels are allowed in Blogger.
  • Better trackbacks integration: Most of the blogging platforms support trackbacks from other blogs, again a feature missing in Blogger.

2. Wordpress.com

  • Advertisement Support: Advertisement are not allowed in Wordpress.com blogs, this is a great drawback as many of the bloggers want to make some money online through their blog posts.
  • Theme Editing: Although Wordpress has better themes when compared to Blogger, the fact that editing themes is not allowed makes Blogger superior in this aspect.
  • Support for Plugins: Support for Plugins in a much needed feature as we know that Wordpress is famous for its plugins.

If you like to add any more points to this, please share it in comments.

    Editing can be done in WP blogs also. But we need to pay some $$ for that. If I want to cough up $$, then I can get my own domain+space and get started with WP.org blog. :mrgreen:

    One more improvement in Blogger can be the ability to get the Categories also for posts which need some tweaks right now.

    Otherwise, this post is spot on.

  • nirmaltv (Author) said:

    @Ashwin,
    I know the fact that editing can be done in WP blogs by spending some $, but then it wont have the concept of free blogging. :smile: I fully agree to your point that its better to get own domain and hosting instead of spreding $$ on editing the theme. Actually I had added the Categories, but then forgot to save that version. Thanks for the add, I have updated the post. :smile:

    Nirmal - good points there!

    Amazing how you find them out!

    Cheers!

    @Mani,
    I have used Blogger and Wordpress.com blogs before I shifted to own domain. So I did a study on what lacks on both the free blogging platforms.

    The ONLY thing i hate in Blogger is the commenting system. Regarding templates, since the launch of New Blogger we have seen several wordpress themes ported to blogger. This means Blogger does support dynamic themes, and people have started creating such themes for blogger platform. Apart from that, blogger provides a high level of customization. I’m not against wordpress, but blogger will soon leave wordpress biting dirt.

  • Ken Xu said:

    Wordpress to death!!! :lol:
    But I recently heard about habari CMS system. I think it will be the future hot boy.

  • Kyle Eslick said:

    Good post!

    I would say Blogger’s comment system makes it almost unusable. It certainly wouldn’t be usable if it had a cost associated with it.

  • Technobuzz.net said:

    Yes Nirmal You are right. Both of them need some Improvement.

    But wordpress is much Better thn Blogger

    Thats Y i shifted from blogger to wordpress

  • nirmaltv (Author) said:

    @Nut&Milk,
    I too have seen many popular themes of Wordpress being made to Blogger, this is a good move.

    @Ken,
    Not heard about the CMS system. :sad:

    @Kyle,
    Commenting system is really discouraging one. Even though the post is good, it does not get the deserved comments.

  • nirmaltv (Author) said:

    @Technobuzz,
    You have got it wrong I think, I was talking about free Wordpress @ Wordpress.com. The Wordpress we are using is Wordpress.org. I guess you got the difference I was talking about.

  • Technobuzz.net said:

    OOOppps Sorry :)

  • Nuts & Milk said:

    @technobuzz
    I’ve seen MANY of them :grin:
    Infact as far as i remember i’ve seen more than 50 wordpress themes ported to blogger. The best thing being that blogger lets you customize them in whatever way you want. :grin:

  • nirmaltv (Author) said:

    @Nuts & Milk,
    I never knew that more than 50 themes are ported to Blogger! Thats a good thing for blogger blogs. Theme customization is one of the important things. :smile:

    @Technobuzz,
    The Misty Look theme is really good one. :smile:

    I dearly agree with you Nirmal on the three improvements that you have suggested for Wordpress.com blogs

    but don’t you think that by not allowing custom ads and scripts Wordpress is maintaining its quality and standard

    Blogger blogs don’t we know them? The only thing destroying them is huge amount of scripts and all

    Wordpress is yet safe from these isn’t it :)

  • Shankar Ganesh said:

    Blogger’s comment form is the worst ever :sad: They should bring about a change.

  • Ashok Arora said:

    I never used blogger or wordpress.com, so can’t add much. However while started blogging I researched for blogging software here http://www.helloashok.com/general/hello-world/1/ and decided to go with wordpress.

  • Madhur Kapoor said:

    Great points there Nirmal . Even i hate the comment system of blooger .

  • Gili said:

    As always, Nirmal is correct in his points.
    Today, 6 months after started blogging on a daily basis, my advice to every every new blogger is that for innumerable reasons free blogs are a big no-no, and setting up your blog on a paid server is the best decision you can make in the early stages (Nirmal and Shankar, i believe you concur…)

    Best,
    Gili

  • Shankar Ganesh said:

    Of course, Gili. Self hosted blogs have their own advantages and merits.

  • ram said:

    Blogger commenting system is useless.
    Wordpress.com is not allowing ads and external scripts for security i guess. If they ever allow ads then we will see splogs in wordpress.com also.

  • nirmaltv (Author) said:

    @DJ,
    To an extend thats also true, but what about the fact that no money making is possible? :smile:

    @Gili,
    I do completely agree with you. Self hosted blogging is the best one. :smile:

    I think everyones agrees to the fact that commenting system is the worst thing in blogger. :smile:

  • Haris said:

    Great points there, Nirmal!

    Yeah, the major draw-back of WordPress is that it doesn’t allow the bloggers to add ads.
    I use Blogger, and yes I have also felt the need for the Category feature. But you can take care of that by using tags as categories. :twisted:

  • kanak said:

    I am not much aware of free hosting of wordpress, but i can say commenting of blogger really sucks big time. So many times , coz of that bugging pop up interface. Second coz of the time it takes to appear on the blog and third coz of those highly unreadable captcha image spam protection. So many times i wanted to comment on some posts but coz of such bad commenting option pulled me off. :evil:

  • nirmaltv (Author) said:

    @Harris,
    Tagging and labelling is the only option for Blogger.

    @Kanak,
    Same experience with me too in Blogger. The tab index is also not correct in Blogger. :evil:

  • WordPress Guru Advice said:

    Though I would want any serious blogger not to blog on BOTH of these sites for the most important reason that you dont own your blog.

    However, there is one reason you would want to blog on these sites. Exposure is what you get from there. You may use these two sites to darw some more attraction towards your original blog .:)

  • kishore said:

    there is always a room for improvement isnt it

  • ReviewSaurus said:

    Well, indeed these are the points which will certainly improve the services. Wordpress can really rule this area by just removing the limitation of advertisement. the day they’ll make that change, you’ll find thousands of bloggers shift from blogger to wordpress.

  • Shashank said:

    Well if you are looking for completely free blogging experience then blospot is great otherwise go for WP it rocks….
    @NutsMilk
    There are as many users as there are Wordpress users…they are super powerful…best ones are
    Xoops and Drupal..much more powerful than wordpress but are hard to learn for a newbie..
    But again WP is best for us bloggers.

  • Vaibhav said:

    These points are true, but now adds can be added in the blogger inline, as per new updates by blogger. But WP Still Rocks!!

  • Benedict Herold said:

    Good Points.. The top priority must be blogger comment system! :) I hate it!
