5 Reasons Why I like Flock

For those who don’t know what Flock is, its a free web browser that makes it easy to connect with your friends and express yourself online. Its called the Social Web Browser. Flock has been there for quite some time now and they have released the latest version for Windows.

Flock

Flock is based on the Mozilla Firefox Technology and has all the features of Firefox. Flock also integrates with popular social sites like Technorati, Flickr, Del.icio.us, Photobucket etc. It also has features of blogging and uploading photos.

I downloaded the latest version of Flock (0.9.0) and I found it to be a good browser. Here I’m listing the top 5 reasons why I liked Flock.

1. Good User Interface: One of the best features you will notice about Flock is the good UI. Buttons are designed and positioned neatly.

Flock Interface

The Star button (Shown in the picture) allows you to add sites to your favorites in one click. Although themes are presently not available, I personally don’t think many would like to switch from the default theme.

2. Support for Photo Sharing sites: Flock has build in support for Photobucket and Flickr, 2 of the popular photo sharing sites. Flock allows you to upload upto 1000 photos at the same time to Photobucket and Flickr. You can log in and synchronize your account with Flock. Flock also supports You-Tube. The media bar in the toolbar shows all your media files. Flock allows you to Drag and drop photos and videos from Flock’s Media Minibar to email, comment fields, blogs, etc.

3. Blogging Support: Flock has build in support for popular blogging platforms including self hosted blogs. Presently Flock supports Blogger, Blogsome, Live Journal, Typepad, Wordpress.com, Xanga and self hosted blogs. The blog editor has a build in spell checker.

4. Flock’s Search: This is one of the best features of Flock. The search box is located at the top right corner. The specialty of the search is that, it searches as you type. Flock has a good list of in-build search engines.

5. Extension support: If you are an user of Firefox, then probably you would be knowing the vast number of extensions available for Firefox. Although Flock has only limited number of extension, it supports almost all the Firefox extensions. Firefox extensions can also be converted using the Flock’. But Flock’d is not available for the latest version of Flock. I have installed a few extensions from the Firefox add-on list.

There are still lots of features in Flock like My World page which has the complete list of favorites, feeds, media pages etc for a selected profile. Flock also has advanced fraud protection which keeps you safe from spammers, scammers, and phishers.

I recommend Flock to all who are looking for a good browser with lots of features. So why not give it a try?

Download Flock.

Great post! I would take it a step further and say one of the best thing about Flock is those Flockstars out there. We don’t get paid a single penny to promote the browser, but we do it because we love it and want others to enjoy it as well.

I used Flock as my primary browser up until Firefox 2.0 was released last fall. Now that the Firefox 2.0 features have been added to Flock 0.9, I think I will be switching back.

My biggest complaint would be that it took them almost a full calendar year to get all of Firefox 2.0 included in Flock. If it takes a year to integrate Firefox 3.0 into Flock, there will be some problems. I’m hoping that this won’t be the case, as I love the Flock browser and want nothing more than to see it succeed.

Oh, and thanks for mentioning my guide. I’m hoping to get it updated for Flock 0.9 this weekend!

  3. Nice feature list! I’m going to stick with FF anyway ;)

  32. Hey Nirmal,

Thanks for such a kind review! We’re stoked that you are enjoying Flock, and it’s great to see all these other awesome Flockstars responding to your post. :)

@ Kyle Eslik: I think that would be my biggest complaint about Flock as well. We do not plan to have another giant delay before releasing…in fact, we have many exciting updates planned for the near future (next 3 months, really). And Firefox 3 integration will be top of our list as soon as FF3 is done.

    Flock is back…keep on Flockin’!

  34. Hi Nirmal,

I thought to tell you that I have recently released the beta version of my latest plugin. The plugin makes the life of bloggers easier for them by allowing searching images . It not only allows them to search images in their own database , but also on flickr.

I would appreciate if you have a look, try it, give me feed back and best of all link to it.

Here is the address of the plugin page http://contents-magic.com/flickr-ize-image-search/

Here is the address about some details on this plugin as to why this would be so important for many bloggers like you.
