Moved to Bluehost and Wordpress 2.2
ADVERTISEMENTSYesterday I moved my blog to Bluehost and because of this many of my readers might have faced issues while accessing the blog. Why did I move? Because my previous host was having too much downtimes and also support was not good.
Now this blog is running on Wordpress 2.2. It was a tedious job moving the blog because of some mistakes I did while transferring. Since the DNS settings takes atleast 12 hours to update, I thought I’ll install and upload all the files into the new server.
In the process of uploading all plugins, I accidentally uploaded the sidebar widgets plugin. I forgot the fact that Wordpress 2.2 has sidebar widget support. What happened was this plugin replaced the original file. I installed all the plugin and imported all the posts and found that widgets were not available for me. It was showing some fatal error.
Now I understood the mistake and by the time it was too late to revert back. I had to install WP again and do all the work of installing the plugins again.
After installing all the plugins and sidebars, when I tested by blog in Internet Explorer, it was showing my side bars weirdly.
IE has this habit of showing CSS styles differently. Finally I was able to fix those and my blog is up and running. Another advantage of moving my blog to Bluehost is that I can access the C-Panel from my office PC, my previous host had “:” in the url which is blocked (this is not by any means the reason for shifting
).
Thanks to all my readers for showing the patience when my blog was down.
Share & Enjoy

Nice to know you managed to save your blog
Yup, I do agree that having a reliable webhosting is very important. Sometimes it good to pay abit extra than to save and face alot of downtime problems.

Kuanhoong,
You are absolutely right. Its always better to go for a good host rather than cheap hosting.

I agree I am planning to move out of Dreamhost soon While I appreciate them for providing cheap hosting I find my site goes down often. just a question Nirmal why did you choose Bluehost … I was thinking of moving to MediaTemple sometime next month.
By the way do you use gtalk add me ( contact [at] clazh.com )

Arpit,
I chose Bluehost after consulting with the blogger friends and many of them recommended bluehost.
Initially I had shortlisted dreamhost, but because of the recent downtime I went for Bluehost.
Media temple is the best in hosting, but its very costly compared to others.
By the time you plan to shift, I’ll share my experience with bluehost.
BTW my gtalk ID is nirmaltv

@Manas,
I still don’t know what was the problem. May be it was not supporting WP 2.1.2
@Techie Buzz
Its really tough shifting from one platform to another.

Hey thanks for the comment on my post over at DailyBlogTips (the one about Wordpress tips the other day). I appreciated it.
Your blog is pretty cool - I like a lot of the concepts you’re operating on even more than the design, ha. Related posts, double sidebar, great stuff man. Keep it up

Dreamhost cost $200 per year and if you use the 15% dicount code (just google for it) it comes down to $170=Rs.7000 which is not bad for a year’s hosting. So I guess its double the cost of what bluehost is giving.
Jun 8th, 2007 at 5:01 am
@Arpit,
Which plan are you using? Dreamhost is 7.95$ per year, right?

When I started my blog (TechUntangled.com) I did a lot of research and found that many people recommend BlueHost. I use Bluehost to host my blog and it has been great so far.
Good luck and hopefully there will as few gliches as possible on Bluehost

Welcome to Bluehost. I’ve been pretty impressed with their service so far. It’s particularly good that you can text chat online with a live person if you hit a problem.

Hi,
How does the pricing work. Are you allowed to host N number of domains? Do let me know…
Jun 27th, 2007 at 9:43 pm
@Menon,
Pricing will be 7.95$ per month if you select for one year and 6.95 if you select 2 years. I can see available 999 domains in my dashboard.

Well I will be moving to Dreamhost this weekend. I have had dreamhost account for someother sites and found them to be realiable. Recently they did have some downtimes and now they are OK.

Moreover Dreamhost has now removed CPU minutes calculation and that is real good feature.
