I spent my first two years (1979-1981) in the military typing various documents for the CO (fitness reports, naval messages, publications, etc.). Just the practice caused me to pick up speed. So... why abbreviate when I can type the phrase faster than most people can type the abbreviation. I type 60 to 70 words per minute on average, so I rarely use abbreviations at all.
