How does Yahoo Mail classify spam?

ADVERTISEMENTS

YahooI have been using the Yahoo mail for last 6 years or so. Previously Yahoo mail had the folder named bulk mails and I used to get 100s of bulk mail during the recent times. When Yahoo mail beta was launched I too moved on to the latest version. This version has the folder called spam instead of bulk mails. I never used to check the bulk mails, until the folder was renamed to spam.

Now the question is how does Yahoo mail classify mails as spam? I have been randomly checking the spam mails and recently I found out that many of the mails sent from my friends have gone to spam folder! The interesting catch in this is that these mails were sent from Gmail Ids. Further, the approval mail from Google Adsense, when I joined Adsense, also went to spam folder and infact I was wondering why there was no reply from Google about my application status.
Still no idea how those were mails were treated as spam. Is it because of the presence of too many links in the mail or is it because of the names of the senders? But now I make it sure that I go through spam mails before I delete them.

Comments welcome.

  1. Yahoo probably has their own spam engine. And there can be multiple factors in tagging an email as a spam such as domain name, originating IP, header information, email path (yes some backbone routers can be identified as spam senders and if originating email took that router in it’s path then it can be identified as a spam) etc. As far as google goes, I figured google emails are considered a lot as spam even with other email services like Hotmail. Just whitelist them by adding them to safe senders list.

  2. Is he from Yahoo.. I wonder …
I had changed to Gmail many years before.. so spam filtering is really brilliant

  3. @Shawn,
You are right, many of the mails from Google are considered spam.

    @Ajith,
Gmail has a wonderful spam filter, but I cant dump yahoo mail so soon for Gmail, that y still using Yahoo more than Gmail

  4. I recommend using Gmail for all google related accounts such as Adsense. It ensures that emails will never go to spam.

You can then enable auto forward from Gmail to Yahoo mail! If that appears as spam, tag it as Not Spam and thatz it.

  5. @ Tech Tips Guru,
    Thanks for the tip.

  6. Gmail is by far the best free e-mail service I’m registered to. I noticed that Yahoo Beta is *cough* trying to copy the features of Gmail.

I still maintain some Yahoo e-mail addresses because they are linked to other services like Groups, Messenger, Briefcase etc.

But just for overall e-mail features, I’d stick to Google’s.

  7. Yahoo mail not only marks gmail messages as spam but on occasions it doesn’t even deliver messages! I have finally moved to gmail totally. I even wrote a post on this yahoo problem which was picked up the development team

  8. I’m also in the process of shifting to Gmail, but I have a few groups subscribed to Yahoo, thats why still using it.
