3G or third generation mobile networks allow mobile service providers to provide high bandwidth data applications and allow for better utilization of the frequecy spectrum.
What is all the fuzz about?
Many people in the governmen believe that lot of money can be made by auctioning the 3G spectrum which was done in countries like UK and Germany.
But the major operators in India like Airtel believe that 3G auctioning will result in massive auction fees and lead to unviable service offering. They believe that the allotment should be made based on the subscriber base which will benefit Airtel, BSNL and Reliance. This will also lead to lower tariff rates and also allow India to leap ahead in 3G usage.
The final decision in this regard will be taken by DoT in February. And finally 3G will be available in India this year
